Dilshan challenges batsmen ahead of SA series

Sri Lanka captain Tillakaratne Dilshan says his team's batting must improve if they are to stand a chance in their upcoming series with South Africa.

Batting collapses have dogged Sri Lanka during their three Test series so far this year. Each has ended in a 1-0 defeats - against England, Australia and Pakistan - with innings totals below 200 commonplace for the Asian nation.

The prospects in their next series do not look high as they have lost every Test series in South Africa - although the last one was in 2002/03 so there are few survivors on either side from those matches.

Despite this, batsman Dilshan still believes his team have sufficient experience of the conditions that will face them over the next few weeks.

He said: "We haven't played a Test match here for a while, but we have played one-day series on-and-off in South Africa. Mahela Jayawardena and Kumar Sangakkara have played a lot of cricket in South Africa and if we can get ready for these conditions, I can say it will be a good series."

Dilshan has highlighted the need for his team's batting to fire if they are to have any chance in the three-Test series.

"We know the last few series our batting didn't click," the right-hander said. “That's the main goal for us, to see that our batting unit can put some runs on the board.

"We are carrying a few young players. It's not easy coming to South Africa, especially as they have been playing good cricket. We can't do any mistakes here, they are a good team."

The series gets underway at Centurion on Thursday December 15 with further Tests commencing in Durban on December 26 and Cape Town on January 3.
