De Lange the surprise pick in SA Test squad

Young quick bowler Marchant de Lange has been named in South Africa's squad for the first Test against Sri Lanka, starting at Centurion on Thursday December 15.

The 21-year-old, who only made his first-class debut last year, is unlikely to play because he is recovering from a dislocated thumb. However, his rapid elevation into the full squad shows how highly he is rated by the South African selectors.

De Lange's 5-67 against the touring Australians, for South Africa ‘A', pushed the right-armer's claims following some promising displays at domestic level with Titans.

Opening batsman Alviro Petersen has been recalled to the squad after South Africa's 1-1 draw in their recent home series with Australia.

Meanwhile, quick bowler Lonwabo Tsotsobe, batsman JP Duminy and left-arm-spinner Paul Harris miss out.

Next week's Test is the first of three against the Sri Lankans, who begin their tour on Friday with the first of a three-day match against the South Africa Invitation XI.

Squad: Graeme Smith (capt), AB de Villiers (vice-capt), Hashim Amla, Mark Boucher(wk), Marchant de Lange, Imran Tahir, Jacques Kallis, Morne Morkel, Alviro Petersen, Vernon Philander, Ashwell Prince, Jacques Rudolph, Dale Steyn.
